Mid-term elections (a spooky post)

I threw my ballot into the ballot box on Saturday. When I woke up this morning, I had already received an email notifying me that my ballot had been received and signature verified. I am all set to be counted and fingers crossed that I didn’t make any stupid mistakes.

In general, I am so jaded these days, I’m not sure who the hell to vote for. I look at people’s websites and they spout out all kinds of crapola and some of it sounds good. Like, I’m gonna lower gas and egg prices and I won’t start any wars and I’ll be soooo good for women. But WHAT ARE THEY GONNA ACTUALLY DOOOO? None of the above, right?

So I muddled through like I usually do. A few non-partisan sticking points.

Ballot proposals. I basically just said NO to all five of the local ones. Well, that’s not TECHNICALLY true. I voted YES on a proposal that, if passed, would *prohibit* utility companies from making big contributions to political campaigns (something like that). Nope. That was proposal A. As a kind of bookend to that, proposal E is about The Planet Ann Arbor establishing a commission (or whatever) to explore becoming energy independent. DTE Energy may be a big conglomerate and it is FAR from perfect but I have absolutely no confidence that an electric/gas utility can be easily replaced for a city of this size by a rag-tag consortium of volunteers, some with expertise, most not (I’m guessing).

State ballot proposals: should we have a state constitutional convention this year? NO NO NO NO NO! After the overturn of Roe v. Wade, Great Lake State voters approved a ballot proposal that wrote abortion protections into our constitution. I don’t want anyone to get the chance to remove that. To be fair, the constitutional conventional issue is on the ballot at all because some (obscure?) law requires that it resurface every 16 years.

My last sticking point is bittersweet. Last time we elected school board members (last year?), I was able to quiz my old coffee buddy Sari for who (and who not) to vote for. She served a term on the school board back in the day and although she didn’t run for another term, she was so respected throughout the community that she was called back into volunteer service before the last election with an ad hoc group that focused on recruiting better school board members. I mean, a current board member at the time got into a physical fight with I dunno who at a high school parent information night. But I can’t ask Sari because I’m sure St. Peter snagged her for some important job as soon as she entered the Pearly Gates late last fall. I doubt that he wanted her to make PBJ sandwiches… [Inside family joke]

The pic? That’s the GG arriving back at The Landfill last night after a Lions game with Skeletor in hot pursuit.

I looked at my voter’s pamphlet (especially the endorsements) and also at the recommendations of my local Indivisible chapter. Then I did the best I could!
