Meeting of the minds
Let’s hope I can write about this coherently… It’s all good, don’t worry.
Being a Tuesday, I zoomed with MMCB this morning. We have been friends since our kids were in middle school, which is so long ago that I’m not strong enough count the years. She is Jewish. I am “Christian”. That is I grew up going to Sunday School in a mainstream Methodist church but renounced religion at 16 (with my parents’ permission). Nevertheless, we don’t really talk too much about religious issues. I mean, we sometimes talk (and laugh) about the customs and practices of our respective religions. Like how her grandmother could not turn the lights on or off on Shabbat but she could make a general statement like, “It’s getting dark,” and MMCB (not yet old enough to have to follow those rules) knew to turn on the lights. That kind of stuff.
We had an unusual conversation today in which we discussed Abdul, the democratic senate candidate in the Great Lake State. A lot of MMCB’s Jewish friends (but not all!) did not vote for him because Muslim but she did! I was relieved to be able to say, “So did I!” I also know Christian folks who (I’m gonna guess) didn’t/won’t vote for him. Because Muslim.
She then segued into the question of whether or not I had noticed that Trump’s press secretaries have all been a certain stereotype? Long blonde hair, to be specific. Well, yes, yes, I have. And it is one that annoys me as much as Mar a Lago face. BUT. I have to cringe a bit at my own annoyance because… That was meeeee as a teenager and young woman. That is, I am naturally blonde and I aspired to “beautiful” blondness. Those women are much better groomed than I ever was. No matter how much “product” somebody might put in my hair, it’ll do what it’ll do. For her part MMCB is beautiful with very short dark hair and very little gray.
I have more to say about voting for (or against) someone because of their religion (or color or whatever) but I don’t have the bandwidth tonight or maybe ever.
That bird in the pic is a cormorant. We don’t see many of those in this area but birds get all over the world and ya nevah know. Up at the moominbeach, cormorants totally exfoliated “our” island (Round Island) by pooping on everything. My long late uncle Duck “renamed” it Guano Island. The area Native Americans were eventually allowed to shoot cormorants and the island has returned to the seagulls but the foliage has never really recovered.

I’m hoping that Abdul wins but I’m pretty pessimistic about the so-called Blue Wave. I would like to be surprised like I was with Seattle’s win over KC.
