Trial by fire!

Not sure where to even start here but my most recent landfall here on the Planet (I mean yesterday) was not exactly the smoothest. I absolutely love to drive (y’all have heard that before) and I can drive the I75 SUV Speedway between here and Sault Ste. Siberia pretty much with my eyes closed. Hmmm, maybe that’s why I missed the Howes Lake Wildfaaaar yesterday? Actually, probably not. That faaaarrr, which is now under control, started on Monday when lightning hit a jack pine. The faaarrrr smoldered in that one little pine tree over night and it wasn’t until Tuesday (yesterday) when the wind picked up a bit that it started to spread.

So, I got home and walked to my fave Plum Market and was mucking around in the poor old, neglected Landfill Chitchen. We had some Copper River salmon to grill and I was rattling around cooking some rice on the loverly three-burner Landfill Chitchen stove when… The. power. went. out. Okaaaaayyyy. I found out via facebook that the outage was relatively widespread over here on the west side. Why did the power go out? I dunno. There were no electrical storms anywhere near The Planet Ann Arbor and, historically speaking, we do not lose power frequently. My own personal theory goes like this: 1) Most of the houses in this area were built in the 1950s or 60s. 2) I am sure that central a/c was not installed in them when they were built — it certainly wasn’t in mine! 3) When we moved in back in 1984, I bet that most houses around here *still* didn’t have central a/c. 4) Hello? It is 2011 (who the heck hit the fast forward button again?). I bet there are a *lot* of people who, like us, have installed central a/c in recent years. And we were probably all using it yesterday when the temperature was in the 90s. I bet that was a bit much for the grid.

We were without power for 7-8 hours. When the power finally did come back on at something like 3-4 in the morning, I fumbled to reset my alarm clock and failed miserably. When I woke up, it read something like 8:35!!! It’s okay, it was only about 6:00 but even that is late for me to get up. And I didn’t have any clean underwear because I couldn’t dry the laundry last night. So I bagged my walk and that, of course, got me off on the wrong foot.

Anyway, it was a really good thing that the Long Suffering Cat Herding Person had the day off because I never really managed to engage my brain. And it is still HOT and we still have the a/c on and when it is hot and everybody has their a/c on, the fluorescent light above the loverly three-burner Landfill Chitchen stove flickers for an eternity before it comes on. And I have to keep the big wooden front door shut, which means that no *light* comes in from that source. Both of those situations just about drive me to total utter absolute insanity! But Mouse is here for dinner (and no, we haven’t eaten yet, I had to walk to the Plum [again] after work to get supplies) and The Commander sounds as though she is in pretty good spirits and that particularly makes me happy. And Frooggy is sitting on the cereal and Green Guy (yes, he’s here) is hanging out with Mouse. (And the power is still on, knock on wood.)

Onward? Please?

July heat has arrived with a vengeance a month early here in the Deep South, and I’ve been wondering when the power generation facilities would become overtaxed. But hoped that they wouldn’t. Fingers crossed for you Planeeshians.

That is TOO HOT. My Washingtonian blood only goes up to mid-80s which is rare around here, except in August. Sorry that it was such a discombobulated day. Ugh. I hate getting started on the wrong foot or screwing up my routine. I guess that means I’m getting old!! Glad the Comm is doing well. 🙂
