In which the Crabby Tom returns
I am blahgging from a room at the Hotel Ojibway. This is a surreal experience. I was born in the town of Sault Ste. Siberia and I have walked or driven by the Hotel Ojibway my entire life. I have gone to banquets in the Hotel Ojibway. I have eaten in the hotel’s restaurant. *Froggy* has even, uh, eaten, in the hotel’s restaurant… This is the first time I have been above the first floor.
We did a lot of *stuff* today and I have a lot of photooos. I will probably post some of the others throughout the next week or so, you know, when I am back on The Planet going to work and flinging and life is boring in general. Today was not boring and the photooo I posted is the money shot. It is from around 1957 and the president of the Sault Ste. Siberia 1st National Bank (who I called “grandaddy”) is working the children’s teller window. The bank had just moved to a brand new building and I’ll guess this was a promotional shot.
PNC, which now holds the bank my grandaddy was president of (and dad too, later on) is closing its branches up here and we had a bit of business to take care of here today. We accomplished that and then we had an early lunch at Karl’s Cuisine and headed out to the moominbeach, where we snowshoed down to the beach and out on the ice. Sunburnt face anyone? Nothing serious, just a wee bit pink and warm.
Back to town to check in at the hotel. The GG went down for a nap and I took a walk up to my childhood home on Superior Street. When I got back, the bank manager had facebook messaged me. Was I still in town? She had found pictures! Yes, I am at the Ojibway! I’ll be right over! I had a wonderful time talking to her (she was also The Comm’s next-door neighbor) and I snagged a whole bunch of photos of my dad and grandaddy, etc. Which will get scanned, etc.
They have menus posted in the elevator here at the Hotel Ojibway. And guess what? The Crabby Tom is back! Man of oh man (man of man?), was there ever a stir when “new management” took the Crabby Tom off the menu a few years ago. When the octo-women were alive (and were still octo-women), they used to frequent the restaurant here and a bunch of them were crazy about the Crabby Tom. The Commander was *not* crazy about the Crabby Tom. I’m not sure if she truly didn’t like the Crabby Tom or if she was just being contrary (i.e., “Betty is always *raving* about the Crabby Tom and I think it’s pftzs”). Whatever. We took Radical Betty out to lunch at the Hotel Ojibway during her last summer and THE CRABBY TOM WAS NOT ON THE MENU!!! YIKES! We made our disappointment known and I have to guess that many other folks did too because it’s baaaaack.

when I make the picture bigger, I see less of Don, all of Grandaddy.
